# Changing Work After a Permit Is Approved

An issued permit approves a defined scope and plan set. Product substitutions, layout changes, structural discoveries, and added work may need reviewer approval before they are built or concealed.

## Changes that deserve an early call

- Moving walls, doors, windows, stairs, fixtures, equipment, or the project footprint

- Changing beams, footings, roof framing, braced walls, fire separation, egress, or structural connections

- Adding circuits, plumbing fixtures, gas piping, HVAC equipment, bedrooms, kitchens, rental use, or exterior site work

## Ask which revision path applies

- Some minor changes can be documented in the field; others require revised sheets and plan review

- A scope expansion may require an added trade permit, zoning review, fee adjustment, or separate application

- Do not rely only on a verbal contractor assumption when the approved plans no longer match the work

## Prepare a clean revision

- Mark the changed area and explain why it changed

- Coordinate architectural, structural, energy, and trade drawings

- Include revised calculations, product specifications, engineering, and owner or contractor authorizations when requested

## Protect the inspection sequence

- Pause affected work before the change is concealed

- Keep the revised approval with the original permit set onsite

- Confirm whether already completed work needs a new inspection or whether later inspections have changed

## A worked planning example

Hypothetical case: During a permitted remodel, the owner chooses equipment that needs a different location from the approved drawing. The contractor records the proposed change and asks how it should be reviewed before installing it. Any affected electrical, mechanical and layout sheets are coordinated. The project team then keeps the accepted revision beside the original permit so the inspector is looking at the design actually being built.

## Turn the explanation into a decision

- Compare the proposed change with the issued plan and identify every affected trade or approval.

- Ask the reviewing office whether it needs a field notation, revised drawings or another application.

- Prepare a concise change description and coordinate any revised calculations or equipment documents.

- Do not conceal the affected work while its approval or inspection path is unresolved.

- Give the accepted revision to the site team and confirm whether inspection stages or fees changed.
